Foreword Thinking 2026-05-19
For my entire life, and long before me, America has been the global superpower. This country and its people have benefitted tremendously from this arrangement, and while horrifically unequal internally, as a nation we are absurdly wealthy and privileged.

On a global scale, we are uniquely advantaged. We have plenty of fresh, accessible water. We have an excess of energy resources. We have huge swathes of farmland across the country. We have (generally) decent infrastructure. We have tens of millions of well-educated citizens. We have trillions of dollars. We have and have had the ability to ensure a good, meaningful life to all who live here, and those abroad.

Despite the ease with which this could be accomplished, the temptations of nationalism and imperialism are more alluring to those in charge. Frankly, it is an American tradition to enrich the very few while pillaging and killing working people at home and across the world. I struggle to think of a group of people which this country has not, at the very least, antagonized.

As the decidedly evil government which currently controls the US is further embarrassed by Iran, the ‘world order’, as it were, is unraveling. Other countries are mobilizing to break from American industry and to ensure their safety from the variety of crises we have initiated. The coming energy shock and (likely) food shortage will devastate working people in every country. The reputation and standing of the US has been decimated.

This is an ongoing, intentional failure. It is the result of the hubris and insolence of this government and those who elected it. I do not think a nation has ever self-sabotaged to this level. It is appalling. Ultimately, normal people will suffer greatly as a select few further consolidate wealth and power. I am eager to see if we are capable of reflection and change after this nightmare has concluded.
